What is Reiki?

Founded by Mikao Usui in March 1922, Reiki is a Japanese healing technique designed to promote deep relaxation, stress reduction, and healing.  Reiki is a simple and natural method of spiritual healing that is suitable for anyone looking for a gentle and soothing energy healing modality.

The term Reiki, consists of two Japanese kanji/words where Rei means Spiritual Wisdom and Ki means Life Force Energy.  Combined, it translates to "Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy".  The term Ki has the same meaning as Chi in Chinese and Prana in Sanskrit, which many people may have heard of.  Reiki practitioners receive attunements to channel this universal energy of pure light through the Reiki certification process.  The strength and power of Reiki energy grows exponentially with each level of certification, amplified by the Reiki symbols that are revealed at the second degree and at Advanced Reiki Training/Master levels, respectively.

Reiki in Hospitals, Care Centers & Hospice

Reiki has gained tremendous support and momentum in recent years, and is now being offered at 800+ medical institutions and care facilities across the U.S.  Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, and Cleveland Clinic are few examples of major medical institutions where Reiki is a part of their integrative medicine and/or volunteer programs.  I am deeply grateful for the courage and incredible amount of work that Reiki practitioners and Teachers have put forth in bringing awareness of Reiki energy and making them accessible to those fortunate enough to discover them.  I look forward to seeing a similar momentum for Shamanic Healing in the near future.

What to Expect in a Reiki Session

A typical Reiki session lasts around 60 minutes and is offered either in-person or via distance.

In-Person Sessions (Currently not offered)

In-person session starts off with a brief discussion to understand the areas of focus, and  transitions onto the Reiki portion of the session where the client lies down comfortably and fully clothed on a massage table, and the the Reiki energy is delivered above the various energy centers of the client's body (no touch at my practice).  The Reiki energy flows through the practitioner's hands for the client's highest and greatest good.  The energy is then received by the client which may feel anything from slight tingling sensations and warmth, as well as general sense of deep relaxation and peace.

Distance Sessions:

A distance session is handled slightly differently depending on the practitioner, but often involves connecting with the client via phone or video conferencing for the brief discussion, and the Reiki portion of the session is done in silence with the client lying down in the comfort of their own home.  The practitioner may include a guided meditation as part of his/her service, which can be very helpful in guiding the client into a state of relaxation for receiving the Reiki energy.  For the Reiki portion of the distance session at my practice, I lay out the chakra stones on the massage table exactly as I would in person session.  From there, I maintain the connection that has already been established, and proceed with all the hand placements exactly as I would in person.  My intuition tends to get heightened due to the intensity of the focus I place during this portion of the session, and will often be guided to additional placements the client may be in need of.  Many clients appreciate distance sessions as a great alternative to in-person sessions, as they are able to get into an even deeper level of relaxation in the comfort of their own home, without the hassle of having to travel on location.

Reiki is absolutely a beautiful modality and it will always have a special place in my heart, and I'm very grateful to have discovered it and share with those that feel guided to receive this beautiful energy.

Becoming a Reiki Practitioner

Anyone wishing to pursue and explore the path of a Reiki practitioner is encouraged to do so, to bring this beautiful energy into their lives and the lives of others they support.  A great organization to learn more about Reiki and teaching programs they support, is International Center for Reiki Training.

Please note that intuitive gifts are not a prerequisite for Reiki, although you may be pleasantly surprised with your own intuitive abilities while going through the certification process.

Important Note:

I have been guided to keep Reiki and Shamanic Healing as separate modalities.  I am committed to preserving the unique traditions and techniques in its purest forms.  Reiki and Shamanic healing are very compatible and I encourage everyone to explore both in their own, unique sessions to experience them exactly as intended.  My introduction to the world of energy medicine was through Reiki, and that experience was quite profound and so incredibly healing.  I continue to keep Reiki in my daily life and it's been a beautiful supporting force on my path as a shamanic healer.
